OUGD501 Study Task 3

The idea of the text of Linda Hutcheon is that Postmodernism, compared to Modernism have different features that can distinguish the two. Her view is that postmodernism often uses self-scrutiny, often resulting in contradictory viewpoints on a topic. As she explains in the text 'The Politics of Postmodernism, Hutcheon states Postmodernism often "takes the form of self-concious, self-contradictory, self- undermining statement." She talks further about this idea, saying that these self-deprocating statments "is the use of parody: citing a convention only to make fun of it."

The idea of the text of Jameson is a contradiction to that of Hutcheon. Jameson is in belief that Postmodernism's self-deprocating is pastiche rather than parody. Jameson explains "Pastiche is, like parody, the imitation of a peculiar or unique, idiosyncratic style, the wearing of a linguistic mask, speech in a dead language. But it is a neutral practice of such mimicry, without any of parody's ulterior motives, amputated of the satiric impulse, devoid of laughter"

Hutcheon criticises postmodern theorists such as Jameson and his idea of Postmodernism's pastiche, saying "The prevailing interpretation is that postmodernism offers a value-free, decorative, de-historicized quotation of past forms and that this is a most apt mode for a culture like our own that is oversaturated with images,"
