Identity is the subjective concept of how an individual views themselves. Multiple identities is the idea that an individual can identify as having multiple, more than one of these views about themselves.
How are identities formed?
Basic forms of identity are formed in humans around the age of 2, where basic awareness of themselves forms. People are moulded by their surroundings, such as parents, schools, clubs, peers, etc as they grow into adult life. Humans then form an identity with the inclusion of emotions, job roles, locations, trends, advertising etc.
What is social categorisation?
The categorisation of people in relation to others and their surroundings in the world
What is social comparison?
The comparison of ones self and their similarities and differences against another person
What is social identity theory?
The idea that a person can have multiple identities for various social situations.
What is an example of strong brand identification?
The idea that a person can have a stronger relationship, affiliation or identification with specific brands over others
What are the negative effects on body image?
The idea that one feels unhappy with ones self, that they fall short of body image expectations.
What is self-discrepancy theory?
The idea that people have a set of three expectations of themselves, those being Actual self (the way people are at present point in time,) Ideal Self (the person we aspire to be) and Ought self (the ay we think we should be.)
